Cultural Collaborations

At Omora Healing, we recognize the deep connection between healing, culture, and creative expression. Our cultural collaborations bring together psychodrama, community theatre, and genocide scholarship, working at the crossroads of oral history, tradition, wellness, and the arts. This work began with a focus on the Rwandan experiences of exile, war, and genocide, using storytelling and theatre to explore silences, tensions, and trauma. Over time, our work expanded to engage with other Afrodescendent communities, as well as Black and other communities, addressing intergenerational wounds through art.

We work in relational ways, exploring Kuba-Kubaho-Kubana—the Rwandan philosophy of being as described by Father Alexis Kagame, meaning to be, to be here/now, and to be with. This philosophy guides our approach to healing, helping individuals and communities find meaning and connection. We draw on the Vansina Collection of Ibitekerezo, traditional Rwandan wisdom tales, as well as stories from diverse communities, to reclaim cultural legacies. Through storytelling, play, and improvised theatre, we focus on “waking our stories,” allowing both individuals and communities to experience healing and collective meaning-making in the aftermath of displacement and violence. These artistic collaborations offer space for reflection, healing, and the reimagining of futures rooted in liberation and collective care.

We work with communities and their difficult stories through Playback Theatre, an improvised theatre form in which the stories of audience members are turned into brief, poetic, symbolic, and dramatic enactments by a group of community-based performers trained in this method.

Ibitekerezo

Ibitekerezo

The term Ibitekerezo is derived from the Kinyarwanda verb gutekereza "to recount, reflect, or consider." Lisa is working with a collection of Ibitekerezo — traditional Rwandan wisdom tales through writing and theatre.
